Blog Etiquette 101 - How Do You Approach Blogworld?

Am pondering on blogiquette. How do you view it? If someone comments on your blog, do you respond? I do sometimes, and sometimes think "Oh I must come back and address that..." and then forget.

I guess with the blogs I follow I view it a little like conversation. If it strikes a chord, I'll join in and comment, if it strikes home I may well do my own post here and link back. I just adore how many different worlds we all come from, it makes for far more interesting blog relations and a greater learning experience. Taking the time to walk in another's life shoes. And whilst I simply love finding new blogs, the bigger my list grows the more I find the title/intro which shows up on my reading list has to really grab my interest for me to open it up (just a tip peoples).

I also must admit to wondering about the new followers who NEVER comment. Is it because they are shy, nervous or is it just a lack of interest in what is posted here? I always have a look at the info they post, will go read their blogs if linked in their about me, and of course follow IF they strike a chord.

What about you? What is your take on blogworld? I promise I'll answer this time, lol.

I read a lot of blogs. I love it. It saves me buying books which I have neither the budget or the time to do.

I comment when I have something to say and it doesn't always have to do with how good the post is. On some of my favourite blogs, they have massive followers lists, and I just feel like everything I wanted to say has been said in the 20 or so comments before me. Doesn't mean I love them any less.

Mostly I comment when there is something I think I can add whether it be an opinion, support or a well wish.

I better stop. Maybe I should do one of those response posts you were talking about! ha.

Dannie, I think, for me, that is such a big part of it. People who walk different paths teach me so much, and give me a totally different perspective a lot of the time. I only started blogging 12 months ago myself.

Mel, yes, get the word out to the bigger world! I must admit if something strikes a chord I will comment even if it is only a "what so and so said". Always clamouring to be heard, lol.

For me blogging is largely about building up relationships. I tend to read the blogs of my blog followers/commenters and try to comment as I'm able. If I've left several comments on someone's blog and they've never shown any interest in getting to know me, either through responding to me in their blog comments or checking out my blog, I eventually stop reading them, even if they are good writers.

When people comment on my blog I sometimes comment back on my blog, sometimes email them back (if I have their email, often I don't). I wish blogger gathered emails like Wordpress. But responding to every single comment on my blog seems a little forced I guess. I know some people do that and I actually appreciate a comment back, but sometimes it feels a little excessive.

I've gotten to the point though where I read a lot of blogs now so I'm having trouble keeping up!

I guess i'm one of those people who rarely comment unless something really grabs my attention. But I agree it's cheaper than buying books and it's nice to log into my mailbox and catch up on all the RSS Feeds of my favourite blogs.

Was participating in lots of blog hops recently and I think they are a great way to get people reading, but most people just leave a comment requesting a follow so it feels like they are not really in it for the right reasons.

I'm bad at commenting, I often mean to but forget. But you know I read your blog and still love ya.

I usually pop a comment in, for encouragement or just to say hi, other times I join in the debate/discussion at hand.
Yep, like a conversation you join in.

I do it exactly like you, MadMother. And then, once I read up on who has followed me and I've gone and checked them out, I tend to try commenting a few times (to connect with them mostly). But more often than not, they don't come and reciprocate AND they don't acknowledge any comments I've left them.

When that happens, I tend to simply back away. I don't have much time at all to read new blogs, I tend to have a very small circle of blogs that I read - some are common interest, some are educational - and there are quite a few that I rarely catch up with but which are put back on my radar because they make the occasional comment on my blog and I remember they exist again! (like you! ;) It's a very crowded room in this here blogosphere and even harder to get noticed, I find.

Good post. I am fairly new to blogging and I have a lot of the same questions. I try to visit my followers blogs.. But I am never sure if I need to do as a proper follow up. It will be interesting to watch the comments and see what other people do. I think that its really neat how although none of us really " know " each other... We have a little community to help us learn... Super cool

I've found your post and everyone's comments very insightful and lots of food for thought for me. I love reading the diversity of experiences people share.

I am super new to blogging. I like commenting and participating but then I get a bit worried if I'm over-commenting! But usually in a crowd I go first because no one else does (low shame factor there).

And YES, I'm not a fan of the whole 'like me and I'll like you' thing. probably why I failed selling tupperware to people who didn't need it.

I respond to pretty much all of the comments I get via email (may take a couple of days, but i do). I like continuing the conversation one on one and have some 'regulars' that I look forward to communicating with on a weekly basis. I don't comment back on my blog because I know that I almost never go back to a post to see if the author responded there.

I confess that I don't comment on other blogs as much as I used to - mostly because time and work commitments have got the best of me. If I visit a blog, I will always make a comment. Always. I'm just not getting around as much as I used to do. And if someone leaves a comment on my blog, I will be more likely to go to their blog and comment, rather than responding to their comment on my own blog. If that makes sense...

Great conversation starting post! Thanks for Rewinding at the Fibro.

Prof Freak, i love checking out my followers blogs, in fact have found so many I like that my blogroll is busting at the seams. But I won't do the follow me if I follow you stuff, just isn't the way I work.

Gemma, I don't think you can comment too much if you have something to say. I talk a lot irl, it would feel odd if I didn't do the same in blogworld...

Saucy B - I suck at checking my blog e-mail... in fact I don't even think it is public, lol. Will go back nowadays to check responses to comments. Feeling less stalkerish nowadays as I *know* a lot more bloggers.

Pink Fibro Legend - I usually sit and nod in agreement to your posts, then read the masses of comments and realise everyone has already said anything I wanted to, lol.

*Cue sitting in corner rocking in disappointment as not being the quickest wit in comment land*
